Power of the web - BSS in UK bar roll-out

22 January 2010

Sound Power has been installing BSS Soundweb DSP devices into multiple Lloyds No. 1 bars across the UK. A long-time aficionado of the now-discontinued Soundweb SW9088 Original ‘Green’ DSPs, Sound Power director David Ridout will now switch to the newer Soundweb London devices for future projects.

Ridout praised the intuitive nature of the HiQ.net System Architect software implemented with the Soundweb London devices, and noted the capacity for easy programming of presets and parameters – a particular boon to this roll-out as the bar operators wish to take control away from individual sites.

“We can control the system via RS-232,” observed Ridout, “so the only options the manager has are a slight trim, or to turn it off entirely.”

The presence of a built-in clock – removing the need for a third-party PC – and easy text recognition for the I/Os handled by each device are among the other features of the Soundweb London DSPs highlighted by Ridout.

To date, Sound Power has delivered around 180 group sites operated by JD Wetherspoon (the owner of Lloyds No. 1), 95% of which have been equipped with Soundweb DSPs.

While Ridout admits that the bar/restaurant market has “slowed down” during the past 12 months, he told II that numerous projects are still going ahead. “Basically, everybody has upped their game, so expenditure has increased across the board for audio, video and lighting,” he added.
