The new Perryn Road footbridge spans 32.6m and crosses the busy A40 in Acton, west London. For this major project, Lighting Technology Projects (LTP) was appointed as specialist lighting sub-contractor and consultant to SH Structures, which fabricated the eye-catching yellow single-span steel bridge.
Undertaking the design, installation and commissioning of the architectural lighting scheme for the new crossing, LTP was led for the project by Terry Reeves and Jonathan Adkins, both of whom have extensive experience in bridge illumination. As Reeves observes: "Bridges always require special and individual considerations when key-lighting, involving plenty of creative and practical thought."
To satisfy a lighting brief that called for an environmentally friendly, discreet, elegant and public health and safety regulation-compliant solution, LTP specified 70 units of the new 400mm white BWS 520 4W inset handrail fixtures from Phillips. Thirty-five of these are used on each side of the structure, which straddles the road diagonally.
In addition, the bridge's ramps and stairs are illuminated with a series of IK10++ rated fluorescent fixtures as stipulated by Transport for London.
The Perryn Road project follows several other high-profile bridge lighting schemes supplied by LTP, including Tradeston Bridge over the Clyde in Glasgow and the Sidings Bridge near Swansea.
